E accent alt code: How to type the letter “é” on your keyboard
Overview
Typing the letter “e” with an accent mark over it, such as è, é, ê, or ë, can be achieved using the Windows keyboard’s Alt Code feature.
Alt Codes are designed for typing symbols that do not have a dedicated key on the keyboard. To type an “e” with an accent mark, one can press and hold the Alt key whilst typing the symbol’s Alt Code using the numeric keypad.
How to add a accent over a letter e
The table below shows all the Alt Codes for each of the “e” letters with the accent marks, in both lowercase and uppercase:
Description | Character | Alt Code |
---|---|---|
Capital E acute | É | Alt 0201 |
Small e acute | é | Alt 0233 |
Capital E grave | È | Alt 0200 |
Small e grave | è | Alt 0232 |
Capital E circumflex | Ê | Alt 0202 |
Small e circumflex | ê | Alt 0234 |
Capital E umlaut | Ë | Alt 0203 |
Small e umlaut | ë | Alt 0235 |
To type the “e” letter with any accent mark over it on the keyboard using the Alt Codes, one should follow the instructions below. Let’s illustrate by using the e with grave accent Alt Code (0232).
- Place the insertion pointer where you need to type the symbol.
- Press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard.
- Whilst pressing down the Alt key, using the numeric keypad, type the “e” with grave accent Alt Code (0232 for lowercase è and 0200 for uppercase È). You can refer to the above table for all the various “e” with accent Alt Codes.
- Release the Alt key after typing the Alt Code.
It is important to note that one must use the numeric keypad to type the Alt Code.
One must also turn on the NumLock key to be able to use the numeric keypad.
If one is using a laptop without a numeric keypad, they can press Fn+NmLk keys simultaneously to turn on the hidden numeric keypad for laptops with smaller keyboards.
The Alt Code method can be used to type any symbol or character anywhere on a Windows PC, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and even on a browser like Google Docs.
